The Fifty Penny March is the songwriting collaboration of Jamie Hylands and Hollie Adams English. Currently based in both Glasgow and Belfast, the duo have been writing together for over two years and this month celebrates their first official release.
Recorded at La Chunky Studios in Glasgow, Scotland over a period of months since August 2008, the duo brought in the mixing talents of bassist and friend, Ross Saunders to put his stamp on the songs.
The first of the debut tracks, The Angry Sea, is an achingly soulful ballad that builds from a delicate acoustic and vocal intro by Adams English to an overwhelming crescendo of vocals and Hammond Organ, spelling out the fear of lost faith and misplaced love,
"I can see the red light fading away as you run away from me/ I can see through the fog as you chase across the Angry Sea/ I said, "You don't believe in me"/ I said "You, you don't see."
The remaining tracks help to form a more complete picture of the band. "Inside" is steeped in up tempo beats and driving Rhodes phrases and demonstrates where the band feels most at home musically. Inspired by movements such as Motown and Stax, both Inside and final track Better This Way show the band unashamedly nodding towards the soul classics of yesteryear while keeping touch with contemporaries in modern soul and jazz like Jamie Cullum, Sara Bareilles and Norway's Jarle Bernhoft.
